“Are you married? Do you have children?” are often first questions asked in Tatarstan, a semi-autonomous republic within Russia. The project explores individual lifestyles set against traditional values, personal wishes and expectations in a transitioning country.
Born in Berlin, GDR, Stephanie Neumann grew up as an urban native with Tatar roots. Barefoot on the road, swimming in the river Kama, food stamps in the magasin. Sometimes back in Berlin there is a certain smell that reminds her of Tatarstan. Then it draws her into a country behind the borders of her European home, that, after the Soviet Union fell apart, is searching for it’s identity.
